The Skate Social offers roller skating in Launceston, Lilydale & George Town. A community-focused roller skating program designed to help children and young people build confidence, coordination, fitness and social connection through skating.
Our sessions are beginner-friendly, inclusive and intentionally kept to smaller group sizes so every participant feels supported as they learn and progress.
Whether your child is stepping onto skates for the first time or already loves to roll, The Skate Social creates a welcoming environment where kids can move, learn, build friendships and have fun.

Coach Introduction
Shona has over 30 years of roller skating experience across recreational skating, roller derby, coaching, performance skating and competitive disciplines.
She has coached beginner skaters through to competitive level athletes, including coaching and skating with A-level roller derby travel team.
Her experience spans roller derby, roller fitness, private coaching and skill-development programs, with a strong focus on confidence-building, safe progression and supportive learning environments.
Alongside extensive real-world coaching experience, Shona has completed coaching qualifications through the Australian Sports Commission, holds a First Aid certificate & Working with Vulnerable People check.
The Skate Social was created to offer something fun, welcoming and community-focused for kids, teens and families wanting to try something different.

Do I need previous skating experience?
Not at all. The Skate Social is designed to be beginner-friendly, and many participants are stepping onto skates for the very first time.
What age groups are the classes suitable for?
Our sessions are primarily designed for children and young people, with session groupings based on confidence and skill level rather than strict age categories.
What’s the difference between Learn To Skate and Skill Builder?
Learn To Skate focuses on foundational skills, confidence and safe movement for newer skaters. Skill Builder is designed for participants wanting to continue progressing their skating skills in a more development-focused session.
Do I need to stay during my child’s session?
Parents or guardians of children aged 5–7 are required to remain present during sessions. Older children may be dropped off if appropriate for the venue and session type.
What kind of skates are allowed?
Quad roller skates designed for indoor use are recommended. Inline skates/rollerblades are currently not permitted during sessions.
Do I pay for public holidays?
Sessions will not run over public holidays and you will not be charged.
How do I pay?
You can pay for the sessions upfront at the beginning of the term via bank deposit or weekly payments via direct debt.
Can we hire skates?
Yes, We have limited number of roller skates available for hire. Skate hire is required to be booked before your session to avoid disappointment & skate hire attracts a small fee.
Is The Skate Social suitable for shy or anxious kids?
Absolutely. Many children feel more comfortable in our relaxed, encouraging environment compared to traditional sports settings. We focus heavily on confidence-building and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Do you offer birthday parties or private events?
Yes! We are accepting expressions of interest for birthday parties, community events, workshops, school holiday programs and pop-up skate events.
Where can I attend a Skate Social session or event?
The Skate Social is currently operating out of Lilydale Memorial Hall, Graham Fairless Centre in George Town & and Launceston, University of Tasmania’s UniGym in Newnham.
